Match

Round 8

Day

1 of 2

Date

15th January 2008

by Andrew Baker

I have received numerous complaints about the lack of report of the last days pay against Warringah. In short we won all 4 grades easily with 3rd grade winning outright. Matt Burton took 6 wickets in 1st grade to be the stand out performer. This week see’s a bit of  change in the format with Burto revamping his segment. It will still be a barrel of laughs but in the end we really couldn’t think of any more questions to ask.  AB

1st Grade 264 VS Roseville 3/44

With Womble away on a junket in the US Matt Burton took over the reigns and won the toss and decided to have 1st use of George Parry oval. At 3-12 it was looking a shaky decision a but a good fight back from Collo and Donno saw us get the score to to 73 before Donno was caught for 30.. Will and Collo then put on 98 for the next wicket with Will scoring 33 on debut. Matt Burton made a quick fire 38 and the tail collapsed soon after. But the highlight of the innings was Collo’s 118 from 160 balls. Including 18 boundaries.

We had a few overs at them and we managed to pick up 3 wickets with Matt, Shan and Maxy all getting one each.

2nd Grade 8/329 (dec) VS Roseville 2/10

Raoul won yet another toss and decided to have 1st use of the chase. We lost Jamie, DB and woody all early and we were in a bit of trouble at 3/26 a good partnership from the returning Christian “Slug” O’Neill and MT saw us get to 88 before MT was bowled for 33. Slug made a quality 61 and JNo made 30 as we reached 6-191. This is where the carnage started 1st it was Bruce Leslie who teed off smashing an important 70, along with The package, 28, and Barbon, 52*, we ended up amassing 329 and leaving ourselves 6 overs at them.

Ijaz bowled with good heat and control and picked us up 2 crucial wickets. To leave them languishing at 2/10 at stumps

3rd Grade 3/72 Vs Roseville 150

With a stinking hot day ahead of us it was thought by many of the bowlers that if we won the toss we would be able to put our feet up but alas we were fielding and it wasn’t because of the opposition skipper winning the toss. In all fairness to Burto it was the right decision our strength is certainly our bowling and the wicket did look like their would be something in it early.

Sneaky was the 1st to strike with a nice bouncer that took the top edge and popped up to AV. Next to strike was Burto who found the edge and the catch was easily taken by me at 1st slip. Moose then picked up 2 in 2 balls to leave them struggling at 4-40. A good partnership helped by some missed chances saw Roseville edge into a stronger position as we neared tea. Flash was introduced into the attack and picked up the dangerous White with Stillman taking an easy catch.

I picked one up the ball after tea and that sparked a collapse with their number 7 trying his best to run out the tail. He succeeded with running 2 out as I ended up with 3, Moose 2 and Flash and Burto one a piece.

Rossy and Stillman got us off to a solid start before Rossy was bowled by a full toss. Stillman and Nandana put together a good partnership until Guy was bowled and Nath Ross went the same way an over later as we looked in a bit of trouble. Flash and Nandana saw out the day to leave us in a strong position going into day 2.

4th Grade 260 VS Roseville 1-60

JJ won the toss and decided to have 1st use of a good Roseville Park deck. Not real sure on how things went I know Eddie Aph…. Had to retire hurt injured with a torn calf. CNo made a good 56. Brad Williams made 31, Mark Freeburn 33 and Trent Miller 38 all got amongst it and a good last wicket partnership between Trent and Michael Croucher, 15, saw us make 260 which is competitive at Roseville but certainly gettable.

JP picked up an early one but that is where joy ended as we put down some chances and saw Roseville get to 60 with the loss of only one wicket.

5th Grade 156 lost to Burwood 3/203

Auburn 5ths travelled to Ron Routley Oval to play Burwood on Saturday.  We lost the toss and bowled on an absolute road but with a slowish outfield. We struggled to get an early breakthrough, until Pottsy got one, well caught at mid wicket by Steve Duhigg. Burwood then established a large partnership, during which Brad Stone made his return to the Eagles, bowling without luck. Burwood took the score close to 200 before Richard Hawker and Peter Camilleri each took a late wicket, both caught by Ben

French, leaving Burwood at 3/203 off their 45 overs, an imposing score given the slowness of the outfield, but gettable on such a flat wicket.

Our chase started well, with Mark Cotter and Ben French proceeding steadily to the first drinks break at 15 overs. However, we lost Mark soon after drinks, LBW for 29. Ben went next for a patient 14. Grant Sanders was next out, skying a chest-high full bunger from their spinner. We then lost Duhigg and Brad Stone pretty quickly, before Wayne Moore and Richard Hawker combined for a good partnership. When Wayne went, we lost Peter Camilleri and Elliot Stillman in consecutive balls. Pottsy & Richard Hawker then combined for a good partnership, with Richard the major partner, playing some fantastic shots to keep us in touch with the target, despite suffering with an illness. In the end, the run rate was to high, and Richard holed out to mid off for an excellent 59. Pottsy went 2 balls later, and the innings was over, Auburn making 159 with 4 overs remaining.

Under 24’s 171 lost to Burwood 204

We lost the toss and were forced to field on a good Rothwell deck. By the looks of things all but 2 batsmen form Burwood got runs with Stevo picking up 4 wickets and Flash getting 3 being the standouts.

With the bat it was Will that led the way with 35, and Woody 31. It was a combination of rain and some good bowling from Burwood that saw them get the points. Some good cameo from Ash Vella and Cooky wasn’t enough as we went down by 33.

Burto’s Bit

A new year and a new name for this section, from now on this will be known as Burto’s Bit. So lets get into it…..

There’s a bit of a lag in updating results vault for some grades, so the tables are as accurate as possible and will be updated accordingly once all the stats are in. But, the big movement on the weekend was big Jamie Heywood taking one on the pads and moving into the joint lead in the Big Pads Award. Bakes is up to bat next Saturday and will no doubt be looking to edge back in front. If Szade’s is umpiring, Bakes will be odds on to regain the lead.  The Rouillo Average Award still looks a close tussle. The stats aren’t in yet from the weekend, but I do know that none of the top 3 got a duck, so kept themselves all in contention.

Raoul 5/7

Pottsy 4/5

Gordon Starkey 4/8

Duck Update

Fortunately for a few blokes, Frank Gray ducks don’t count, but it is currently a 4 way tie at the top.

Boods 3

BIRTHDAYS

Happy Birthday to the following in January;

Dono, Steve Duhigg, Emran & the great man Tribs, who is now finally older than his bowling average.

SUNDRIES

At the request of Cricket Australia, I have been asked to issue a few apologies due to animal names being used in nicknames that may have caused offence.

Mitchell Starc – Monkey arms (In my defence, the kid was 15 and his arms were longer than his legs, it wasn’t an insult, he could field anything within 5 metres of him)

Raoul Barbon – Seagull

Andrew Baker – Dugong

Matt Treloar - Seal

I apologise unreservedly for the above comments, I meant no offence.

Facing Roseville this week had me nervous. Twice in the last 3 years against them, drinks have been a shambles. Who can forget 3 years ago in 2’s? Damn hot day, luckily we’re batting and Captain Raoul leading from the front is carrying the Gatorade bucket full of cordial out for the poor dehydrated Roseville fieldsmen to drink from. Unfortunately, Raoul’s feet aren’t as reliable as him declaring whilst he’s not out, and over he goes, a lovely cordial river flowing down the hill out of Roseville Chase. Roseville’s captain was not overly impressed at our laughter….

Last year, 3rd Grade drinks, Bakes has made up the cordial and brought it out for the Roseville fieldsmen. A “bit of a weak mix” according to them and down goes the bottles and cups and poor old Bakes is storming off the field muttering something along the lines of “ Well make it your bloody selves then”….

Let’s hope Day 2 this week remains uneventful.

A couple of quick points  to end the week;

·        Currently, George Parry Oval is ranked number 1 in Shires. After winning ground of the year last year, we’d all love to see the boys back up and win it again. If you do manage to get to your game on time, and the ground staff are still there, thank them for the great job they are doing and support them to win back to back titles.

·        Please check this out, this photo belongs in a calendar- http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=531203929

·        James Gatrick moved onto 99 wickets for the club on Saturday, there’s still 9 on offer this Saturday for this long time Eagle to finally hit the 100. Give him plenty of overs Jewy!!

That’s it until next week, work hard for the points boys and let’s stay in front in the Club Championship.
