1st Grade VS Epping 7-137

Patience was the name of the day as 1st grade had a frustrating wait to get on the field due to the incessant drizzle that was around.

When play finally got under way it was Matt Burton, 3-40, and the in-form Michael Stevens, 2-19, that did all the damage with the ball to leave Epping languishing at 7-137 going into day 2.

2nd Grade VS Epping washed out--EARLY START NEXT WEEK

3rd Grade VS Epping washed out--EARLY START NEXT WEEK

4th Grade VS Epping washed out--EARLY START NEXT WEEK

5th Grade 6-104 defeated Lindfield 103 with a Bonus Point

To the surprise to everyone 5th grade managed to get a game in on Saturday. With the drizzle and the conditions around it was a bit surprising that Lindfield chose to have a bat. Early on it was prodigal son Paul Costin who picked up and early wicket and along with Pottsy, 3-21, had them in some early trouble at 5-37. A good partnership saw them get to about before Costo Struck again and it was Richard Hawker that cleaned up the tail taking 4-11.

We never looked in trouble as we chased down the 104 for victory with Craig Wildman making a solid return getting 26. Matt White, 24 not out , and A Roughly, 26 not out, saw us across the line with a bonus point.

A good return to form for 5th grade who now have won 3 on the trot.

U/24s 2-137 defeated Macquarie Uni 136 with a bonus point

In the battle of the list making clubs it was the eagle that triumphed in a comfortable victory on the ground we all love the Northern Oval. Just on a side note it is the 1st game that I can remember where Auburn has won there and especially in a game which we were clearly supposed to lose, being weak opposition according to their web site.

We got off to a flier against the competition favourites, just ask them, with man of the moment Stevens picking up a few early ones. Mitch Wakeford picked up one with a screamer to Stevens But it was Moose, 3-18, and Tim Affleck, 2-32, who put the screws on and had Mac Uni bundled out for a surprising 136 considering we are not that strong. From what I saw our fielding was pretty good with only a few missed chances.

Catches win matches and Will made the keeper pay for an easy drop early one when if another wicket had fallen we would’ve been in some deep trouble. But Stevo, 59, and Will, 56no, did all the hard work and it was MT and Will that guided us across the line in an unsuspected victory against such a strong team. All in all a good 2 weeks for us against Mac Uni. picking up 4 wins from 5 grades. Most importantly we got some bonus points along the way.

Another important game for 24’s this week when they come up against the strong Pennant Hills club. In a must win game for both the 24’s and our club championship aspirations a big crowd would be handy to support the young fellas.

ASK BURTO

Due to the overwhelming success of the “AV Big Pads Award”, 2 more prestigious awards have been created. In recognition of valuing your wicket (or just batting to protect your average), the “Raoul Barbon Red Inks Award” will be presented to the player with the most not outs in the season. To date this season (as at end of Round 5), the cream has risen to the top, with the 3 pre-season favourites for the crown currently leading;

  1. M Potter – 4 from 4 innings
  2. R Barbon – 4 from 5 innings
  3. JA – 3 from 4 innings.

Also, we have the “Marc Rouillon Worst Average without a Duck Award”, which is pretty self explanatory but does require a minimum of 5 innings. Current leader board (end of Rd 5);

  1. G Sheargold – 7.2
  2. M Freeburn – 10.2
  3. C Watson – 14.8
  4. T Miller – 14.83

More guys need to get those big pads working & test those umpies out on their knowledge of the LBW rule. The AV Award leader board is;

A Baker 3

T Affleck 3

T Miller 3

& a heap of guys on 2, so work hard and get back & across boys, put those pads to use & try to beat last year's record of 6 by Emran, Cowan, Roshan, Eddie Aph & of course, the great man AV himself.

Reminders -     Xmas Party after day 1 vs Warringah at DOOLEYS Saturday December 15. $16 per head and all are welcome. Please let your captains know ASAP.

-          Wednesday December 5 – Cam Watson will be playing at the SCG, representing the Shires XI against the Grade XI. If you have the chance, get out there, it’s always a great day.

-          Fantasy League – Get your $20 to myself or Bakes ASAP please, and the guys in my team, DO SOMETHING!!!!!!!!

Burto’s Man of the Month for November based on phone calls, postal votes and ResultsVault Club Champion points is………..

Ashley Vella who scored a whopping 298.5 points in a rain affected month. Ironically, with the month also being known as “Movember”, Ash is probably the only guy in the club who can’t actually grow one………..

Knowing my old man spent a good 10-15 years in the old dart didn’t prepare me for the fact that a long lost brother tracked me down this week. I thought it was a hoax until I saw the unmistakeable resemblance in the photo.
