In round 5 action we took on the students with the victors guaranteed to go to the top of the Club Championship. We won 3 out of the 4 grades and now sit perched on top in the chase for Dave Tribolet Trophy. 5th grade got up in a low scoring thriller against Souths but undoubtedly the highlight of the weekend was our second hat-trick in 2 weeks with club favourite Pete Abboud picking up the rare feat. Just on a side not in the 4 shires games between the 2 clubs there were 19 ducks which is a quarter of the wickets to fall.
1st Grade 154 defeated by Macquarie Uni 190 with 1BP
Cam won the toss and decided to send the students in to have a bat. Michael Stevens continued his good form picking up the openers early to have them 2-12. Wickets then proceeded to fall at regular intervals to have the students bundled out for 190. Stevo picked up 3 wickets, Cam 2 and Kirwan, Burto and Donaldson, in his return game, all picked up 1 each and there were 2 run outs.
Our chase never really got going with only Donno and Stevens inflicting any damage, making 42 and 46* respectively as we were all out for 154 in the 41st over.
2nd Grade 137 defeated Macquarie Uni 57 with 2BP
The coin came up wrong for Raoul and we were sent into bat on deck that looked pretty good. We struggled early and never really got going in the innings and if it wasn’t for 51 from Bula and 26 from Rana in a little cameo at the end it could’ve been a whole lot worse as the 3 final wickets all fell for globes.
137 was a score that 2nd grade always thought they could defend if the bowled well. It was the ‘Ginger Ninja’ Charlie Leonard that picked up the 2 of the 1st 3 wickets to fall and along with Shan had the students in trouble at 3-24. The score moved on to 37 before the Enigma struck. Ijaz taking 4-1 off 3 overs to destroy the heart of the students batting line up taking them form 3-37 to 9-37. Raoul managed to pick up to in this time as well and it was Max that took the last wicket to hand us an unlikely 2 bonus points and leave 2’s 6 points clear on the top of the table. The bowling figures were Ijaz 4-6 off 5, Barbon 2-13 off 3, Charlie 2-19 off 6 and Rana and Max both picked up one each
3rd Grade 125 defeated Macquarie Uni 97 with 1BP
Burto won the toss and decide to have 1st use of the Gwilliam oval. We lost Stillman early for 2 but Nath Ross and Emmy steadied the ship and got the score to 37 before Rossy holed out after making 19 sparking a min collapse that saw us at 5-52. Burto and Flash Gordon then put on 61 for the 6 wicket getting the score to 113 before Burto was caught for 53 including 6 boundaries and 3 sixes. Once Burto was out we lost 5-12 to be all out for 125.
Burto and Szades took the new pill and Burto removed to 2 openers to have them 2-30. A partnership of 24 saw them edge closer and looking good to get the points but enter the Moose and Bastow who took 5-20 between them to have them in trouble at 7-74. Szades came back on and picked up 2 wickets and Flash got the last wicket to have an unlikely victory for 3’s with a bonus point. Burto took 2-18 off 10, Papanis 3-29 off 10, Bastow 2-11 off 7, Szady 2-29 off 8 and Flash 1-6.
4th Grade 198 beat Macquarie Uni 9-197
Wow what a game.
We lost Boods early for a golden duck and Sheargold and Miller steadied the ship until an ugly run out saw Trent stranded. Jewiss made 68, John Affleck made 35 and Pete Ananin made 28 as we were all out in the 49th over for a competitive score of 198 when at one stage 150 looked like it would’ve been a good score for us. .
Croucher and Jewiss opened up and it was Jewiss that got us off to a good start removing on of the openers and their number 3 in his spell of 10 overs. Miller replaced Croucher and continued the bad run of luck he has had all year having a couple of chances go down and narrowly missed. He eventually removed their opener with a easy catch to C-No at cover.
What happened next was nothing short of a miracle. Boods Bowled there number 5 with a big inswinger, then had there number 6 caught behind cutting a ball that was 2 close to him which brought their skipper to the crease to face the Hat-trick ball. The balcony was packed Boods begins is run-up and bowls an innocuous ball down the leg that the skipper plays, Trent goes full stretch and gloves it down the leg side. Then everyone goes up and the umpires finger is raised and Boods has a Hat-trick and pandemonium ensures.
After the emotion of the hat-trick it was game back on now and a good partnership saw them edge closer to victory and until I removed their number 8 with some good work from Trent behind the stumps. The equation was simple they needed 59 off the last 10 overs to win.
Croucher, Ananin and Miller bowled well keeping the runs and it eventually got to 13 needed off the last 2 overs with 3 wickets in hand. A run out in the second last over and only 3 runs off it saw them need 10 off 6 balls. But the big question would be who would bowl the last over. With Jewiss, Miller and Croucher Bowled out and me off the field with a sore hand it was left to Geoff “Gayeyes” Sheargold to bowl the last over.
1st ball- Single 9 off 5
2nd ball- Single 8 off 4
3rd ball- Skied to mid off Wilton made good ground to it but put it down and the scamper through for 2 6 off 3
4th ball- Wicket skied to Trent at midwicket 6 off 2
5th ball- single 5 off 1
6th ball- called for wide 4 off 1
7th ball- they scamper through for 2 and victory is ours by 1 run.
Boods picked up 3 Jewy picked up 2 and Miller, Sheargold and Me both picked up 1 each.
5th Grade 8-75 defeated South Sydney 74
In a low scoring affair at Alexandria oval 5s got up. JA won the toss and had no hesitation in sending the opposition in. Pottsy, 3-15 off 7.5 overs, Duhigg, 3-20 off 6 and G. Fleming, 3-21 off 7 did all the damage routing the Bunnies for 74. It was 17 from the prodigal son Eddie A and 14 from Stevie D that saw us get close to the total and it was JA, 78, and Mick Potter, 9*, that saw us get across the line.

What new awards will be handed out this season if any?
I am proud to announce, that a new award has been initiated this season to acknowledge the past achievements of excellence in being trapped in front by Aaron Vella. The AV Big Pads Award will therefore be awarded to the player who can emulate his feats in being given out LBW the most times in the season. It’s currently a close tussle, with many players doing their utmost to be the first recipient of what will no doubt become a very prestigious award. The current leader board is:
A Baker 3
T Affleck 3
D Bettiol 2
M Burton 2
M Emran 2
J Heywood 2
B Leslie 2
C Smith 2
D Wood 2
Stay tuned for updates during the season
DB has sent through another top 10. This week strongest arms:
10. Wes Saunders - One of the few people that’s taken a hatrick for the Eagle. Brilliant arm from anywhere on the ground.
9. Suresh Liyange – Loved the big wind up and throw from the boundary. Never failed to get it to the keeper on the full.
8. Raffee Hakim – For a small bloke, Raffee has the ability to sprint, spring up and fire the ball in from any boundary in the competition over the stumps. Superb athlete.
7. Mick Rose – Deadly accurate and if delivered with a grunt, extremely powerful.
6. Jason Jewis – Probably never saw the best of Jewy’s arm as he came to the club in his mid 30s. Still by then it was accurate, strong and deadly.
5. Ben Treloar – Super fielder and tremendous arm. Excellent throwing technique.
4. Shan Rana – The king of half volley returns but when he unleashes the throws sting the keepers hands. Ability to hit the stumps when fielding inside the circle.
3. Brad Dowling - His brother couldn’t throw but Brad’s arm was excellent. Liked to show it off a bit too much meaning batsmen would rarely take him on. Flat as a pancake from anywhere inside of 50 yards.
2. Nathan Rugless - A superb arm and good accuracy too. Pulled off a crucial run out in 00/01 against Holryod in the wet with a soap like ball with a 35 yard bullet.
1. Simon Mahony – The only bloke I’ve ever consistently seen throw the ball on George Parry (Mona 1) from the boundary to over the stumps like a bullet. The best arm I’ve seen in twelve years at the Eagle.
