23rd October 2007 |
By Andrew Baker
It was 2 of the younger guys that stole the show in round 2 with Guy Stillman, 105, and Tim Affleck, 102, both scoring maiden hundreds for the Eagles. Tim’s brother Matt smashed 78*, Michael Stevens hit 63, Tony Ross made 63 as well and Matt Wilton smashed 82* to set up the 10 points for 4th grade. On the other side of things Jewy took 5-13 to help 4’s get the maximum points.
1st Grade 77 & 7-256 lost 1st innings to Pennant Hills 227
Penno resumed at 7-170 trying to bat the eagles out of the game whereas we needed quick wickets to get ourselves back in the match. It was Tim’s brother Matt that did the damage on the second day picking up 2 wickets to finish with 4-48 of 24 and Cooky picked up the last one to have the Pumas all out for 227, with Stevens taking 4-51 and cook 2-81.
We needed to bat out about 60 overs in the afternoon which we did 7 down. Kirwan got off to flyer hitting 19 before he was caught. Collison, 11, Watson, 14, and Greentree, 12 all made starts and failed to go one with things. A good partnership of 70 from Stevens and Smith, 42 off 35, saw us edge closer to safety. Matt Burton then took control of the game smashing them everywhere making an unbeaten 78 and he was ably supported by Stevens who made 63.
It is the grand finalist back to back for Auburn playing Souths next round. Probably the best batting in the comp up against probably one of the better bowling sides in the comp.
2nd Grade 306 lost 1st inning to Pennant Hills 7-307
Resuming at 0-30 we would have to bowl well and have some luck go our way to secure the 6 points. From all reports we did bowl well but the luck was lacking, but full credit to the Penno boys chasing down 300 is really a tough ask even if it is a belter of a wicket.
Slim Szady, Shan and Charlie all picked one up early to have them 3/84. A partnership was then broken by Tim’s brother Will but then another partnership saw the score reach 250 before Shan struck with 3 quick wickets to leave them 7-275. However, it wasn’t to be and the reached the target with oout any more losses.
Shan took 4-64 off 16 with Charlie, Matt and Will all picking up a wicket.
3rd Grade 300 defeated Pennant Hills 168
Resuming over night Tim and Emmy got us off to a slow but steady start until Emmy was bowled around his legs; the second time this year that he has been out down the leg side. Nath Ross came and went to leave us in a bit of trouble at 4-53. A good 108 run partnership by Tim and Tony Ross saw us edge closer. Tony smashed the bowling to all parts of the ground hitting 11 fours in his 63 and didn’t give a chance till he got out.
Meanwhile at the other end Tim was the rock our innings was built on scoring his 1st century for the club amassing 102. The inning was a mixture of patience and burst of stroke making.
Flash, 34, and Moose, 21 not out, had some fun at the end as we reached 300 for the second time in as many games.
4th Grade 7-326 defeated Pennant Hills 180 & 61 outright
Resuming at 1-120 we felt confident we could get the 6 points and maybe press for the maximum and it couldn’t have gone any more to script. Except for losing Belly, 62, with only one run to the score. Sheargold, 11, and Novo, 13, both got starts which should’ve been converted into bigger scores. Once past the total Guy Stillman, who knocked up his 1st hundred for the club in his 1st game, and Matt Wilton, 82*, smoked the bowlers everywhere with some of Matt sixes landing on the roof of the clubhouse there. Steve Duhigg also finished with 18* to show there are some talented batsmen who have won the duck award.
With Penno only in survival mode tight bowling and good catching could see us get an unlikely 10 points. The skipper took 5-13 off 9 overs, Croucher took 2-32, Trent Miller finally got in the wickets taking 2-5 and Boods picked up the last one to have 10 points come our way and Penno to be bundled out for 61.
A good win for 4’s after a disappointing 1st round.
5th Grade 206 lost to Georges River 7-297
Mick Potter Reports:
Auburn 5ths travelled to Bland Oval to play Riverwood on Saturday. We lost the toss and fielded. We had to field with only 9 players for the 1st hour, which made life difficult, and Georges River took full advantage, being 1/86 after 15 overs. Peter Camilleri took the first wicket, an excellent sliding catch by Peter Bastow. Bastow got the next wicket, caught in close by Edrees. Grant Sanders got the next 2 wickets, both bowled as Georges River hit out late in the innings, and Din got a caught & bowled. They continued to score heavily, particularly on the short straight boundaries. Peter Camilleri bowled one and Pottsy caught the last wicket to fall of Sanders. Georges River finished with an imposing total of 7/297 in 45 overs. Grant was the pick of the bowlers, with brilliant figures of 3/25 from 7. Peter Camilleri took 2/50 and Din Bakshi 1/42. A special mention for Pete Bastow, who ended up with the unlucky figures of 1/55, and fielded like a demon all day, especially early when we were short.
Auburn opened with Edrees and Pete Bastow. Edrees was bowled for a duck and Pete went for 8, 2/11. Rob Leonard and Dave Wood consolidated before Rob was stumped for 13. Dave played well in his comeback match from a broken finger, but when he was caught for 28, Auburn were 4/54 and way behind the run rate. Peter Ananin now joined Grant Sanders and they put on an excellent partnership of 72, punishing the bowlers and causing quite a bit of bush bashing as the Georges River fielders looked for the ball after big sixes (of course, we had to do a bit of that ourselves in the 1st innings). The partnership was ended when Peter lifted one to point and was caught for 38. Grant was out not long after, also caught for 38, 5/136. Din Bakshi and Wayne Moore then put on 48, both playing aggressively. Wayne managed to lose the ball by flicking one off his legs over cow corner into the service station. Din played some forcing shots, but he began to mistime his strokes and finally skied one and was caught for 21, 6/188. Peter Camilleri came and went for 1, Wayne's excellent innings of 35 was over when he was also caught, and JA was caught for a duck. Pottsy was not out 6, Auburn all out for 206.
The big difference was Georges River's ability to build a couple of big
partnerships in the top order, which was made much easier by our shortage of
players in the 1st 15 overs. While we did have some good partnerships during
which we scored at a good rate, we couldn't match 6 an over for 45 overs. Man of
the match was clearly Grant Sanders, who performed with both bat and ball to
continue his good early season form. Peter Ananin played beautifully for his 38
and kept well, and Wayne batted with great aggression for his 35. Next week we
finally get to play at Princes against Mac Uni after 3 games on the road.
Ask Burto
ASK BURTO
This weeks Ask Burto will answer the big question posed by the 40-year-old virgin last week, “Where’s Burto?”
Despite rumours of gay weddings, setting up a love nest with Dewahs and a couple of quiet beers with Ben Cousins, I can assure all my loyal fans that I am fine and have indeed not “disappeared”.
It is true that I have moved into a new place (yes, with Dewahs), which has taken up a bit of my time, but have also been enjoying a bit of time at the cinema, moonlit walks on the beach, quiet dinners in little out of the way restaurants and plenty of quality time in front of the TV watching a few DVD’s.
Hopefully Friar Tuck will one day be able to drop the ‘scare’ from his name, find himself something that half resembles a female, and experience what I have been for the last couple of weeks.
So, in reply, if anyone has an ugly step-sister, a desperate friend or even a lonely farm animal, please email their details to the address Andrew gave last week & lets try to get the guy some lovin’.
Burto
Dear Burto,
I heard on the radio last night something about Nasal Spray Technology. Now, with all these new things like this and Viagra on the market, what is your take on it all?
Mona Park Sniper
I can understand why you wouldn’t use your real name but this is nothing to be embarrassed about Sniper. I personally have not used any of these since my vow of celibacy until we can win a Premiership or Club Championship. But, as someone once told me, as you get older, sex gets more like shooting pool with a rope, so these products should be embraced and used without shame or embarrassment. I’m all for them and would be happy to sample any freebies that are thrown my way!
Just be careful with what you take, as a general rule, I don’t like people who take drugs…… such as Customs Officers for example.
Burto
Last weeks winner of the question where is burto is Shane Cook. Not only does he get his $10 gift voucher at Neds but he also gets his profile done. His answer was a s follows:
It is rumoured that Victorian laws have recently legalised Gay marriages.
Daniel Burton & Nathan Deery have been spotted by a gentlemen dressed up like Elvis. (who is apparently licensed to marry)
Our missing couple is currently in the process of being hitched in a barnyard somewhere as we speak.
The reason I know this is Aaron Vella & I have been doing our own research on the new laws for our own personal undisclosed reasons.
From all the club members of the Auburn Eagles I wish them all the best in their lifetime commitment.
Bring back videos of the honeymoon ;)
