Round 2 |
Day |
1 |
Date |
16th October 2007 |
Round 2 commenced on Saturday against Pennant Hills with 2’s, 3’s and 4’s all putting in good performances and being in the prime position after day 1. Unfortunately for 1st and 5th grade though it was a different story with 1st grade already down on 1st innings and 5’s getting beat by Lindfield in their one dayer.
1st Grade 77 Vs Pennant Hills 7-161
1st grade were greeted with a green top that looked like it would play up all day. A crucial toss to win and unfortunately for Cam it came up in the Puma’s favour and they asked us to have a hit.
By the looks of things no one really got going except for Smithy who smacked 35 and from all reports we did well to manage 77. The Penno bowling was of the highest standard and never really allowed us to get on top.
With the pitch slowly starting to turn in the batsmen’s favour it was always going to be difficult for us to restrict last year’s grand finalist. Cooky got one early and the Pumas were looking good at 1-36. However, they then lost 6-3 to be struggling at 7-39 with the eagles back in with a sniff. Michael Stevens and Burto doing the damage taking 4-33 and 2-31 wickets respectively.
However, after that it was all Penno as they passed our total 7 down and proceeded to build an 80 odd run lead, which will make an interesting day of cricket next week.
2nd Grade 306 Vs Pennant Hills 0-36
At last Raoul won a toss and elected to have a bat on the Pennant Hills Highway. We lost 3 early wickets until Max and Will “Fogle” Affleck put on 56 for the next wicket before Fogle was caught on the boundary for 31. Max went soon after for 31 and this begun the trend for the day with everyone else all getting starts. Bruce made 34, Shan made 30, Vella made a good 41, smashing it to all parts of the ground, even Slim made a start with 30, but once again it was the skipper who did all the damage making 56 not out, his 3rd not out of the season and the early favourite to win the batting average this season.
We came out to bowl at the end of the day and got punished a bit going for 36 off 5 overs. It will be a case of early wickets next week and we will have to bowl and field extremely well to get the 6 points.
3rd Grade 2-38 Vs Pennant Hills 168
There are 2 things that sum up the days play:
1. Moose Knuckle
2. Poor Catching
Dimitri “Moose Knuckle” Papanis got us off to the perfect start with a nice bouncer that caught the glove and popped up to Emmy in the gully. Burto then caught one off Mitch to have the Puma’s 2 down. Next over was when the poor catching started with yours truly putting down a tough chance at 1st slip. However, I redeemed myself 2 balls later when I caught the same batsmen for no damage to the score and have the Puma’s struggling at 3-8. A good partnership from former Eagle Varsani and their number 5 saw them reach 78 before Tim struck with 2 wickets in 2 overs to leave Penno 5 down just before tea with their top scorer from last round and one of their more experienced players at the crease.
Tea came and went and our enthusiasm after the break was lack lustre to see the least. But a superb effort from the one we call Moose got us back into the game. It was he who single-handedly swung the match back our way hitting the deck hard and causing problems all through out the afternoon to finish with 7-23 off 17.5 overs with 8 maidens including 5 catches dropped of his bowling.
Dewahs and Emmy got us off to a solid start before Dewahs tried to play his 1st real aggressive shot and was caught for 4. Raffee played his usual but was gone for 8. Tim and Emmy then saw us out to the end of play. A good day for 3’s and some good batting next week should see us get 6 points.
4th Grade 1-120 Vs Pennant Hills 180
Pennant Hills won the toss and decided to have a bat on a good looking Penno number 2. Dangerous Michael Croucher (DMC) got us off to the perfect start taking a wicket in the 1st over. The top 3 bowlers Croucher, Duhigg and Jewiss all picked up 3 wickets with Jewy and Duhigg both taking 3-15 off 7 and Croucher taking 3-43 off 10 to have Penno bundled out for 180.
Belly then proceeded to smash the bowling everywhere making 62* and he was ably supported by the debutant Guy Stillman who made 46*, and like 3’s some good sensible batting should see us past the total easily.
5th Grade 198 lost to Lindfield 4-199
Mick Potter Reports:
Auburn travelled to Koola Park on Saturday to play Lindfield. We batted first on a very low & slow deck. We lost Richard Hawker early for 2, nicking one down the leg side. Matt Treloar and Rob Lenard then put together a good partnership of 76 before Rob jumped down the wicket to their spinner & was stumped for 29. Matt was out next over, trapped in front by a low one for a well-made 53. Grant Sanders struggled with the slow wicket, but managed to put together a good 50 before being bowled, supported by Edrees Kalil with 12. Things slowed down after Grant's dismissal, but we managed to achieve a competitive total of 8-198 from our 45 overs.
The Lindfield innings started slowly, with Pottsy keeping them quiet, and Peter
Camilleri breaking through at the other end, Matt Treloar taking the catch -
1/13. Matt Treloar replaced Peter, and bowled the other opener, 2/26 and Auburn
were on top. Lindfield now dug in, and got themselves in on the low, slow deck.
Mohammed Din Bakshi made a breakthrough, and they were 3/76, but from this point
on our lack of a spinner really hurt us. The Lindfield batsmen were now used to
the deck, and they put on a partnership of 111. Auburn were one short in the
field, and we missed a couple of crucial chances. Finally, JA got one past the
bat and Richard Hawker
made a good stumping, but the damage was done at 4/186. Lindfield knocked off
the rest of the runs, reaching our score with 10 overs to go.
Well played to Lindfield, who handled the conditions better than we did.
Probably the crucial difference was Lindfield's two spinners, who slowed the
Auburn scoring and took the wickets of set batsmen. Our medium pace attack was
unable to do the same thing to them. The Eagles will look to bounce back against
Georges River at Bland next Saturday.
