Match

Round 13 2008

Day

One Day Limited Overs

Date

19th March 2008

by Andrew Baker

Well if you have been in a coma for the last couple of days you would have missed that “Dave” has finally come home. That’s right we wrapped up the Club Championship with 3 wins out of 4 on Saturday, with 1st grade going down narrowly after losing Shan and Cooky both to injuries. 2nd grade sealed the minor premiership with an emphatic win over the Covies and 4th grade wrapped up second place, disposing of the 3rd place Coves. Unfortunately, even though 3’s picked up their 1st points for 2008 it wasn’t enough for us to make the semi’s with Roseville beating Mac Uni with a BP.

1st grade had a bowl first on the weekend and when Shan was carried off to the hospital in an ambo, and Cooky tore his good hammy we were in a bit of trouble. However, the bowlers soldiered on and ended up dismissing the Covies for 211. Stevo, ended up with 3 and Kirwan and Smith both picked up 2 each. In reply Donno made 49 in a return to form and Collo made 43 as we were badly hampered by the loss of Rana in the chase.

We play Pennant Hills next week at Penno 1 in a replay of last years qualifying final and hopefully the good guys can be on the right end of the result this year after narrowly going down last year.

2’s as mentioned above wrapped up the minor premiership with a bonus point win over Lane Cove. With the bat it was Max 49*, Package 43 and Tim Affleck 23 who got us to a competitive total of 206. in the field it was Tim that stole the show with 3-19 and a direct hit from 20 yards, Matt Treloar, Barbon, Labrooy and Khan all took a wicket each.

In 2nd grade we play the dangerous Lindfield side who knocked up 270 against us earlier in the year. Charlie should be back this round to strengthen the bowling and we do have the benefit of getting a second chance if we do happen to go down.

Dewahs, 75*, and the Golden Boy, Wakeford, 54*, stole the sho with the bat putting on an unbeaten 138 for the 3rd wicket to see us get across the line with a BP. Earlier DB and Stillman put on 84 for the 1st wicket with Stills making 45 and DB 23. in the filed it was Trent who picked up 4 wickets, Golden Boy picked up 2, Moose picked up 2 and the crow picked up 2. AV ended up with 5 dismissals. The spell of the match that went unrewarded, was Peter Ananin spell that helped restrict Lane Cove to 230.

4’s secured second spot with a bonus point win on the weekend. With the bat it was only Abboud 23, and Hawker 19, that made any runs. Boods also did his best to help Lane cove running both Pete Bastow and Szudsey out. With the ball it was Slim that did all the damage taking 4 fa. JJ picked up 3 and sneaky Pete picked up 2 as Lane Cove never looked in the match.

A good win and a big boost heading into the qualifying final to play the same side this week at Dave Tribolet oval.

5’s went down to Lindfield on Sunday. Batting 1st Lindfield made 175, with all the bowlers used picking up one apiece. With the bat it was only Hawker, 41, and Tom Wood 53 that made any runs as we went down by 11 runs. 5th grade play Georges river on the weekend in a game that could go either way depending on availability for the might eagle and which players get selected in the higher grades.

Burto’s Bit

DAVE HAS FINALLY COME HOME!!!

After many years in the wilderness, the last few at Burwood, Dave Tribolet has finally come back to his spiritual home. On a day when results were see-sawing, it wasn’t until late on Saturday, and after Woody’s 280th phone call of the day, that we were confirmed as Club Champions for 2007/08. Our aim at the start of the day was to win all 4 grades and consolidate our lead. We almost achieved that but at the end of the day, we extended our lead. Now, if only Mac Uni 3’s could have prevented Roseville from getting a bonus point……

Unfortunately for my guys, we missed the finals by a point despite finishing the season strongly & having an overall quotient of 150%. I can guarantee that there are 6 teams in the finals all breathing easier that we missed out.

Well done to Mitch & Deery for breaking the 3rd Grade 3rd wicket partnership record.

Congratulations must also go to Raoul and 2nd Grade on their Minor Premiership. As many of us know, 2’s have had some lean years in recent times and for them to finish the season in 1st by such a large margin is a magnificent achievement.

The Big Pads Award is still led by Bakes, however, finals matches will be taken into consideration, so stay tuned...

Peter Philipson shows the trophy to the committee

The Rouillo Average is still Sheargold’s for the taking & with AV not getting to bat on Saturday it looks like Geoff has it wrapped up.

Geoff   7.86

Peter Ananin  14.67

AV 15.3

Early season favourite JA has cruised back into the lead in the Red Inks with Pottsy hot on his tail;

JA 8/11

Pottsy 8/12

Ash Vella 6/15

Moose 5/8

Raoul 5/9

Croucher 5/9

The Duck Award has 2 new leaders!! Peter Camilleri & (no surprise) Matt Szady have hit the front with 4 but they’re only just ahead of a large chasing pack.

Fantasy league looked all over but Will “McLovin” Affleck has somehow hit the front after Don had opened up a big lead. Looks like it’s going down to the wire…. (& pay up if you haven’t yet!)

March Birthdays

Peter Abboud, Raoul Barbon, Daniel Bettiol, Mark Cotter, Michael Croucher, Paul Greentree, Richard Hawker, Ijaz Khan & Gordon Starkey.

There have been messages of congratulations from far wide that I have been asked to pass on. In particular Jason Bell & Neil Jones want to congratulate everyone on winning the Club Championship. I’m still waiting to hear from Costo…..

Now that we have got that monkey off our back, let’s work hard in the finals and get some more silverware in the cabinet. For the guys whose playing season may be over, the one’s who are still playing would love your support at the various finals matches we are involved with. So, get down to the games and support the club, there’s still 4 premierships to win!!
