Match

Round 12 2008

Day

2 of 2

Date

11th March 2008

by Andrew Baker

24 points lead in the chase for Dave after the weekend results. It’s ours to win boys and a good showing against the competitive Coves this weekend should see us bring Dave back to his spiritual home.

1st Grade 7(dec)-250 and 0-31 beat Southern Districts 147 & 150 on 1st innings

We rolled them early to set up an outright chance with Cook, taking 4-46, Watson, 4-23 and Kirwan picking up a couple. We needed early wickets in the second dig and it was again Watson, 4-32, Cook 3-37 and Kirwan 2-17 that took the majority of the wickets leaving us 48 off 4 to get the maximum. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and we fell 17 short.

2nd Grade 4 dec 282 beat Southern Districts 49 & 67 outright

We lost Charlie during the warm ups dislocating a finger. But it was Barbon, 3-10, Maxy, 4-5 and Tim that picked up the 1st innings wickets on the second day. In the second dig the wickets were shared around with Ijaz, Max and Will taking 2 a piece and the skipper and Tim picking up one each to give us an easy 10 points and setting up a real chance to win the Minor premiership against the Coves

3rd Grade 175 & 6-116 lost to Southern Districts 186 & 9 dec 118 on 1st Innings

Our chase started poorly losing Mitch early and I went soon after caught down the leg side. AV and Trent then tried to rebuild the innings but when we lost TM and Wayne in consecutive balls we were in real trouble. Enter the Moose who with AV put on 29 to give us a shot at winning but a suicidal run out cost us and we were bundled out for 175. With plenty left to play for in the day we set about getting quick wickets which we did. We got 8 of them to have them struggling at 8 for about 80. But we just couldn’t get the last 2 and the total that was set was just out of our reach. With the ball, the skipper was finally rewarded taking 3-25, TM picked up 2, and Szades, Mitch and I picked up one each. The highlight of the innings and a turning point was Mark Freeburn’s awesome one hand pick up and underarm at the stumps that saw their skipper out by 1 metre, it was brilliant stuff.

With the bat Stillman smashed 26 off 10 balls. The skipper, 38*, and Szades, 26, nearly got us over the line but we fell 13 runs short. A must win game next week. With a bit of catch 22 about it. With Mac Uni playing Roseville we need the Roses to win for our CC aspirations but we need Mac Uni to win for our 3rd grade hopes. I know I would prefer the CC over the semis in 3s but both would be awesome.

4th Grade 2 dec 129 beat Southern Districts 66 & 20 outright

Probably an average drive of about 50 minutes for us to get there and all it took was one ball to wrap up the match. With Jewy bowling their remaining batsmen 1st ball after their 2 overnight batsmen didn’t show up.

5th Grade 9/181 def Pennant Hills 7/177

Dewahs, 2-33, and Dave Ananin, 3-21, opened up and picked up a few early wickets, Quadrat was the other wicket taker picking up a wicket in his 1st Eagle game. We were in trouble early until a good 43* from Steve Duhigg, 26 from Joshi, 24 from Quadrat and 18 from Dave A saw us get close to the target and it was JA that once got us across the line to secure a semi spot in 5s.

Burto’s Bit

Well, the good news is we’re back on top in the race for the Dave Tribolet Club Championship. Our destiny is in our hands and with the right results this week against the usually friendly Covies, we could be celebrating hard on Saturday. It wasa poor week for 3rd grade narrowly missing the points twice on Saturday. If that wasn’t painful enough for me personally, seeing my beloved MRF snap in half during the frantic run chase was then topped off by a malicious, unprovoked assault on the streets of the city on Saturday night. If anyone can shed some light on the identity of the assailant, it would be greatly appreciated. All I have to go on is a pretty loose description despite being in the company of an off duty police officer. We’re looking for someone about 5ft 6in to 5ft 8in with blonde or light brown hair, possibly with an injured right hand if my nose & teeth are anything to go by. She did hit hard though!!!

3rd Grade’s skipper fronting the media on Sunday

The Big Pads Award is still led by Bakes, however Trent has moved into joint 2nd and there are still quite a number of results not entered yet so the table could change yet again.

Bakes 5

Jamie 4

Trent 4

DB 3

Tim 3

Dave Wood 3

Bruce 3

Guy  3

The Rouillo Average is still Sheargold’s for the taking & with AV getting 34 and 1no on Saturday it looks like Geoff has it wrapped up.

Geoff   7.86

AV   14

Peter Ananin  14.67

Early season favourite JA has cruised back into the lead in the Red Inks;

JA 7/9

Pottsy 6/9

Ash Vella 6/14

Moose 5/8

Raoul 5/8

Flash 5/14

The Duck Award is still wide open with 7 guys on 3, but again, still a lot of results outstanding.

Fantasy league looked all over but Will “McLovin” Affleck has somehow hit the front after Don had opened up a big lead. Looks like it’s going down to the wire…. (& pay up if you haven’t yet!)

Milestones haven’t been updated all season, so here is what has been achieved this season to date;

M Collison 2500 runs

J Novosel 2000 runs

C O’Neill 2000 runs

C O’Neill 150 wkts

We also have J Gatrick on 99 wickets & S Duhigg on 49 wkts.

I was contacted at the weekend by our old mate Sam Williams. Here’s his message;

"Burto, How’s tricks hero? Was wondering on the off chance that anyone at the club that bowls rapid wants to have a season over here? We're struggling for an overseas opening bowler, offering flight, accommodation, job, good banter and drinking! A long shot I know but drop me a line if anyone’s looking please mate. Love you. Sammy"

So, if anyone is interested, or knows of anyone who would be, let me know and I will put them in touch with Sam. Personally, I wish it was 10 years ago, I would be straight over there.

This weekend’s matches are shaping as the most vital for the club in 25 years. We need as many guys as possible at training this week and I’m requesting a total alcohol ban for Friday night. We need to get as many Club Championship points as we can and get the trophy back to it’s spiritual home.
