Round 12 2008 |
Day |
1 of 2 |
Date |
6th March 2008 |
by Andrew Baker
In the penultimate round of the regular season we faced up to the might of the Ants. It was a day for hundreds with two club stalwarts JNo and package scoring breathtaking Centuries in 2nd grade. While Paul Greentree knocked up his 1st ton for the club after missing out narrowly against Lindfield. Nath Ross and Guy Stillman both knocked up half centuries and your 2 intrepid reporters both put in sterling efforts on Sunday in an effort to get all the inside news form the Eaglets loss to the Men in Green.
1st Grade 7(dec)-250 vs Southern Districts 3/69
In 1st grade we lost the toss and were asked to bat 1st. It was Paul Greentree who stole the show scoring 118 with a mix of graceful strokes and a few lusty sixes. Cam Watson 33 and Craig Smith 31* also got starts. Our openers Pommy Stevens and Cam Watson faced an better than expected bowling attack on a viciously seaming pitch which also threw up a few balls which popped up on a good length. They hung on courageously while the moisture evaporated from the pitch so that the middle order had the opportunity to rack up enough for the declaration. A generous declaration left SD’s with plenty of overs left in the day and we managed to pick up 3 wickets. I think Cooky got a couple. I’m sorry to the rest of the guys in ones but it’s really hard to write a report with no information.
Congratulations to Gordon Starkey for making his 1st grade debut. Sadly the first ball he faced cut in just a bit to pin him for LBW.
2nd Grade 4 dec 282 vs Southern Districts 3/21
Raoul lost the toss and we were sent in on a deck that was under-prepared and a slow outfield. We lost Nandana, DB and Will early and it was JNo and Tim that set about building the innings again. Tim eventually went for a patient and timely 39. The Package was sent out to boost the scoring rate and that he did. Shawn scored better than a run a ball 102 no, his second for the club, and Jason scored and unbeaten 111 getting his 1st ton for the club. They put on 177 for the 5th wicket in just over 23 overs at just under 8 an over. JNo hit 4 zacks and Package 5 as we declared with plenty of time left in the day and surprisingly without the captain at the crease.
Ijaz and Maxy picked up the wickets to leave SD’s in a precarious position.
3rd Grade 4/102 Vs Southern Districts 186
Burto won the toss and we did the sensible thing and bowled on a deck that was wetter than the Mona Park Sniper’s appetite for a free feed. Szades picked up a wicket in the 1st over and we continued to pick up wickets at a constant rate but we also conceded plenty of runs until big Trent Miller was introduced and he picked up 5/23, on debut in 3’s, off 15 overs. Mitch picked up 2, Moose 1 and a good run out to Mark finished it up.
We had 25 overs to survive and the skipper decided to pad up and go out and face the new ball, he made 10. But it was Stillman that was smashing the bowling everywhere he made a quick fire 52, until he ran down the wicket to the spinner and was stumped. Marky Mark made a nice 16 until he was beaten in the flight by the spinner. Mitch is unbeaten on 12 and somehow I managed to survive the day. It will be crucial we don’t lose early wickets next week in our chase for the 6 points.
4th Grade 2 dec 129 VS Southern Districts 66 & 7/20
JJ won the toss and sent the Ants in. Christian O’Neill burgled his way to 4-22, Crouch did his average no harm taking 3-7 and Jewy and Bastow cleaned up as well. We chased down the total easily and Nath Ross smashed 67*, and Slug made 36* as we declared 69 in front.
We then proceeded to go through the Ants once again with Bastow picking up 3-6, O’Neill, 2-2, and Croucher and Jase getting on a piece.
5th Grade 176 def Georges River 150
We made 176 through a good half century from Dave Ananin, who smashed the ball all over the place, and 33 from Frenchy 33. With the ball the wickets were shared around with Pete Camilleri, 2-9, Stevey D 2-29, Harry Potter, 2-22 and Dave A, 2-18. The win helps 5th grade cement a spot in the semis.
Under 24’s 80 lost to Warringah 6-182
Cook won the toss and decided to have a bowl in wet conditions. It paid off withy us restricting them to 182 of their allotment, Mitch Picked up and unlucky 2-49, Cooky 2-33, and Stevo 1-46.
Guy’s dismissal set the standard for the innings with the Green men not letting up in the field. There were probably 3, half chances taken by Warringah that we failed to take. The costly run out of MT and the unfortunate dismissal of Will, set the tone as well and only AV, 12 not out, reached double figures with the bat. However, Messrs Burton and Crow both reached double figures in beers consumed
Burto’s Bit
Sunday’s Frank Gray Final ended in disappointment for the Eagles against the MiG (Men in Ginger). Despite Charlie’s best efforts, he was no match for the double red headed assault from Warringah’s opening bowlers. There was some sore heads amongst the spectators on Monday, who gave their all and then some. The boys bowled and fielded well above themselves and can hold their heads up high.
The Big Pads Award leader strode to the crease as night watchman in 3’s. But with the black & whites not attending on day 2, he will surely now increase his lead as soon as ball hits pad.
Bakes 5
Jamie 4
DB 3
Tim 3
Dave Wood 3
Bruce 3
Trent 3
The Rouillo Average is still Sheargold’s for the taking but with the 24’s stats still outstanding, could AV be making a late charge????
Geoff 7.86
AV 11.67
Peter Ananin 14.67
Ash Vella has rocketed to the lead in the Red inks, with a hungry pack chasing;
Ash Vella 6/14
Pottsy 5/7
Moose 5/7
JA 5/7
Raoul 5/8
Flash 5/14
The Duck Award is still wide open with 6 guys on 3.
Fantasy league looks all over with Don Rose opening up a bit of a lead, but anything could happen & there’s rumours of Matt Treloar entering an invalid team, so hold all tickets.
After last week, Pete Bastow has asked to change his quote. It’s now, “You have to lose 2 to win 3”, so I guess that means we will either win 3 premierships this season, or the next 3 Frank Gray Shields. Either way, no one can question the genius of the man.
There were plenty of photo’s taken at Tantallon on Sunday, however, due to a technical mishap, there is only 1 to display at this stage. Here’s Ned & Peter Philipson on the balcony at Tantallon last Sunday;
