Match

Round 1

Day

2

Date

9th October 2007

The weekend saw the conclusion of round one with 4 out of the 5 grades getting a victory up. The highlight was an outright win to 2nd grade. 1st and 3rd grade notched up a victory as did 5’s on Sunday. Unfortunately 4th grade could not make it as clean sweep and were convincingly beaten by the Hurricanes.

1st Grade 227 def. NWS 190 & 5-135 on 1st innings

We resumed at 4-136 and set about knocking of the runs as soon as possible. 1st to go was Smithy for 16. Watson went soon after for 33, and Matt for 19 and it was Shawn “Package” Freeburn & Kasun Bulathsinghala, from now on to be known in this article and all future articles as Bula, that saw us past the total. However by the looks of things it was Package that did all the scoring, in fact it was Package that did most of the damage on Saturday hitting 37 in 9 boundaries.

We set about trying to get quick wickets to try and chase the outright but it wasn’t to be. With Cooky injured Michael Kirwan had his 1st bowl for the Eagle picking up 2 wickets in his opening spell. Burto toiled hard and picked up 2-31 and Collo picked up his 1st wicket for the club.

A good solid start for 1st grade and look to build on this next week when they take on the team that knocked out of the semis and went on to make the grand final last year Pennant Hills. The encounter between these 2 sides have always been tough contests and expect nothing less next weekend.

2nd Grade 6(dec)-246 & 4-90 def. NWS 106 & 231 outright

Raoul decided that the 140 lead was enough and asked the Canies to have another bat. An opening stand of 51 saw NWS off to a better start than last week, however once again it was Charlie that got the breakthrough bowling their opener. Another good partnership saw the Hurricanes reach 90 before, the hurricanes lost 3 wickets in 3 overs for no runs with Barbon taking 2 and Maxy picking up the other one. Another partnership of 30 odd was broken when Will bowled their keeper. It was a similar story as the afternoon went on with little partnerships which eventually saw the NWS bowled out for 231 leaving us 9 overs top get the maximum 10 points. Max’s effort must be commended bowling 26 out of the 35 overs from one end taking 3-57 including 10 maidens. Szady took 2-34, with Charlie and Raoul taking 2-42 and Will taking 1-26.

It was going to have to be a slog-a-thon if we were going to achieve this and DB didn’t let us down. To bad he didn’t connect with any of these swings and was out early for 4. At the other end, Jamie, was batting well and hit 2 boundaries and 1 six in his quickfire 25. JNo hit a boundary in his 4 and Nandana batted sensibly at the end to get us home. But it was the clean hitting of the skipper that got us home. He smashed 45 including 3 boundaries and 3 sixes, one which went onto Mona St, one which hit halfway up the light tower near the club house and one that landed on the hill.

A good 1st up win by Raoul’s men against one of the stronger sides in the comp.

3rd Grade 8(dec)-358 def. NWS 160 on 1st innings

3rd grade had 2 goals on the weekend. One was to break the record club partnership and the other was to get the 6 points, and they achieved both. The record was broken in the 2nd over of the day with Burto squeezing out a single to gully. However, it was a great cover drive from Mitch that got them equal with record. Burto called it quits once they passed the record leaving Mitch unbeaten on 145* and Burto 138*.

Sneaky Pete, obviously glad that he had the pads off after the marathon effort last week, and I know what your think Pete didn’t bat, but he did sit there for 4 hours with the pads on, took the 1st 3 wickets to have the Canes in trouble at 3-19. After a bit of a partnership it was Burto that picked up the next one with a nice off cutter that took middle peg. Another partnership by 2 of their more experienced guys saw them edge closer to tea without another wicket but it was our 2 youngest guys that removed them front.

A wicket after tea saw the NWS skipper to crease who only knows one way to bat and which he shwoed early doors. But some good tight bowling from Tim and Mitch saw him under control and eventually it was and nice little in swinger from Raffee that had him plumb. Raffee picked up another one soon after and Sneaky picked up the last wicket to give us a big win 1st up. Pete was the pick of the bowlers taking 4-27 off 1.5 overs, Mitch picked up 2-43,  to easily take out the man of the match honours, Raffee burgled 2-4 off 3 and Tim toiled hard for his 1-52 off 16 and the skipper underbowled himself to take 1-11 off 5.

4th Grade 217 & 8-154 def. by NWS 360 on 1st innings

Not much really can be said about this. One phrase does some it up though. Catches win matches, and the NWS batsmen punished us for our missed chances. There was some clean hitting amongst the runs and I said some brilliance from one side would win it and unfortunately for us it wasn’t one of our player but 2 of the Canes batsmen that hit us to all parts of the ground.

Boods was the main destroyer taking 4-101 and if it wasn’t for a good running catch by Michael Croucher the score could have been anything. However, the catch change the momentum and a mini collapse ensured with Jewy taking 2 wickets in 2 balls to end up with 3-45 off 15.3. Steve Duhigg picked up an early wicket to take 1-42 and Mark Freeburn’s figures don’t really show how well he bowled.

It was a simple equation after tea for us. We had to survive 44 overs or score 143. However, if it was for Steve Duhigg, 35*, who is massively under priced in fantasy league after the weekend’s effort,  and Jewy, 20*, that saw us safe. Earlier it was some clean hitting from Matt Wilton, who made 38, including 4 boundaries on 3 sixes that helped along the way.

5th Grade 2-140 def. South Sydney 138 with 1BP

Honestly I’m not real sure what happened in 5th grade but it looks like Wayne Moore, who pops up more than a D-grade celebrity on a red carpet, took 3 wickets opening up the bowling, Ben Treloar had a nice little cameo, taking 2-15, Din Mohammad Bakshi took 2 wickets in his debut game for the Eagle and a wicket to both Peter Camilleri and Will Affleck saw souths bundled out 138.

Richard Hawker, in his return game, and Edres Kakall, on debut, saw about getting the runs quick and they put on 48 before Hawker was bowled for 27. Edrees went next for 34 and it was BT, 38,  and Will, 30,  that saw us home with a bonus point.

A good start for JA’s men.

Ask Burto

Dear Burto,

I recently went out on a night out to the Fiddler with our fellow English visitors to show them some of the local wildlife.  Jamie was doing quite well with a young Australian lass, but earlier in the night she was asking me about my marital status.  Upon finding out I had a girlfriend she fixed her targets on to Jamie.

I took it upon myself to cut in & work some of my magic & it worked......

Now, I want to know...... is it fair play to cut a mates grass even if you have a girlfriend..... & what if the girlfriend is also there on the night giving you the green light to do so?????

Shane Cook

Cooky, let me be the 1st to congratulate you on a such a fine performance. If Player of The Year points were awarded for off-field exploits, you’d be a run away leader at this early stage of the season.

The simple answer is – If the missus has given you the go ahead, then you have no one to explain yourself to when you get home. As we have seen over the years at Auburn, it is women who make the rules and actually, although indirectly, control how we perform as a club. When I look back at some of the great players we’ve lost (Rouillo doesn’t count) due to the WAG’s getting involved, we could have won every Club Championship since the early 90’s. If she’s giving you the green light, then you should have been out the door in a flash and home, playing like you had to bat with a runner. (You know, 3 in the middle at once)

As for the grass cutting element, those of us who’ve been with the Eagles a while, know that not only is grass cutting encouraged, it’s expected, whether you’re a bartender, police officer or even a librarian!! And don’t worry about the POMs, I’m sure that Jamie was trying to cut your grass first & if you were on their turf, freezing in the rain, surrounded by those fat, under-dressed English birds with geezer teeth and kebab sauce dripped down their cleavage, that they love so much, they’d do it to you.
